Week 8 : Spirit

Week 8 was on us at a rapid rate of knots, and with a little bit of a harder topic, the pressure was on...

Spirit - what kind of image do you take for this subject? I rattled the good (relative term) 'ol brain to try and figure this out... church, lens flare (which some people consider spirits), hoping and praying that a spirit would very conveniently make itself visible just at the time when i had my camera out so i could photograph it, but then the next trick would be, would you be able to see it in the picture???

In the end, we went with something that was a little bit different, we thought, if not only worth half the subject... here's crossing fingers that next weeks theme is a little 'easier'

Picture from the weekend - 5

I don't think we have posted a 'picture from the weekend' for about 2 weeks now... not sure where the time is flying to, but here you go for last weekend.

This picture was a bit of a combined effort in the visual department. I had the idea for a dark room and playing with light, and Rob then extended it by using his red lazer light.

With a "1...2.......3!" press the shutter release, (on timer) switch off the lounge lights, grab the torch and jump over everything trying not to kick Rob in the head with my knee on the way past, to getting into position ready to shine the torch once the shutter has opened getting Rob to trace his shape in time before the shutter closes again, and VIOLA!!  producing this image on the other end of the screen... phew!!

We think it was worth all the effort... do you?

Thoughts and comments welcome and hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Week 7: Romance

This weeks theme was Romance... should have all seen it coming after the big V-day that was celebrated on Tuesday, 14th February. The much anticipated day of the year, and even more so on leap years! Guys, hope all your beautiful ladies spoilt you rotten, and perhaps even one or 2 of them popped you the BIG question for a change... ;)

Having said all of that, you would think that this weeks theme would be a relatively easy theme to produce, but on the other hand... not so. (for us anyway)
Yes, with all the heart shaped goodies still about, the love teddy bears and the almost dead and barely alive flowers could have made this a little easier, but again, we were looking for something a little different.

In the end, we did end up using a V-day prop to get these photos, and we threw in a nice little silhouette just to break all the cooey-ness.
We had fun doing these pictures, as its something that hasnt been ventured down before on our side - with much oooh-ing and aaah-ing going on. Although you could say we were playing with the light, which is completely true, the ROMANCE for us in these images is more about the mood and ambiance created than the actual objects and subjects involved.

Hope you like these emotive romance images... thoughts and comments welcome!

Week 6 : Body Parts

Week 6, and this weeks the theme is Body Parts.

Now when I mentioned this in conversation around and about, you can imagine all the raised eyebrows that were shown.. ;) I however, think this has been a rather interesting theme.

For us, we tried to go with something original, but not too obvious. For photographers and in my opinion, the most popular body parts to shoot are the eyes, mouth, ears etc, and then when shooting these on babies, they become even more popular. We wanted something different....

So firstly, we must apologise to anyone who has a foot phobia, as the body parts we chose to shoot where the toes. :)

Again, rather challenging, and especially so when they are your own feet and toes when you are trying to shoot a picture that you see in your head, and you cant twist your foot round enough, or contort your body over in the right way to get the shot you want. THANK GOODNESS there was no sneaky second shooter around at the time, as those would be some serious blackmail photos.

Anyway, enough rambling, here it is..

Week 6 : Body Parts

Thoughts and comments welcome, and apologies if my toes offend anyone... :)

Picture from the weekend - 4

The image I have chosen for this weeks picture from the weekend, comes from our long suffering shoot with our 9 year old model, the one who claims he will become famous... which is now probably true. This gorgeous boy is my nephew and belongs to my sister and brother-in-law, and all throughout his life, has been used by default for photo shoots, tea making, dish-taking to the kitchen etc etc, you catch my drift.

The idea for this part of the shoot, was to try and get him coming out of the water, and catching the photograph just at the right point where there is still a layer of water film around him. Penny Haynes type of style...

This is roughly what the shoot sounded like:
"ok, now i want you to go under the water, and come up slowly"
*Garion goes under the water and comes up slowly... only problem is, only his forehead and half his eyes are out the water*
See Exhibit A:

Ok, so that didnt work out so well....

"no, not like that, i want you to go under the water and come up a little quicker and in one motion (photographer motions with hands on how to go under and back up)
*Garion goes under the water and SHOOTS up causing massive splashes, ripples and the photographer to cut half his head off*
See Exhibit B:

Right, so then we have to adjust our thinking.... and decide to go with the continuous shooting option and just hope and pray that we get the shot. Not always ideal for someone wanting to call themselves a photographer, but as the novelty for our youngster model was wearing off, we had to do something drastic to get the shot.

Here is the final shot below, not 100% my vision, but I definitely think it came out well and is pretty awesome!

Thoughts and comments welcome!
Love you my little monster and thank you!

Week 5 : Underwater

Week 5, and we are really starting to get the hang of this and thoroughly enjoying the project!

Obviously when we see the weekly theme and start thinking about what kind of images we can shoot for it, you have this wonderful idea and a vision in your head of how you would like the image to come out... that's exactly how we were.

So, we enlisted the services of our 9 year old model, and off to the swimming pool we went, with him stating he was now going to be famous! :)
The 1st 10-15min of the shoot went fantastically well, and then the bribery had to start as the novelty of this modelling thing wore off.
As with all types of photography, and especially when shooting with children, you have to adapt and change your plan as you go along, but luckily for us, I think the adjustments turned out pretty well...

This is what we got! Thank you monster for helping aunty out, and thanks to sis and bil, you guys ROCK!

Picture from the weekend - 3

This weeks picture from the weekend, is most definitely a huge contestant for my favourite picture of 2012. Even though we are only on the first day of February, this is very quickly becoming a firm favourite of mine. I love the feel and 'emotion' that has been captured here, the veins of the bulb that you dont get to see with the naked eye.

This picture took a little more thinking than the normal outdoors pictures where you can just turn the dial of your camera to AV, TV or heaven forbid, AUTO.

A little extra thinking that produced a wonderful result...

Thoughts and comments welcome, and looking forward to what images will be produced in the weeks to come. Stay tuned!
